About

Hi, I’m Mike, and this is my gardening blog.

I’m not a horticulturalist and I never took a garden design course. I’m self-taught, which means everything here is what actually worked in my own garden, mistakes and all. I started for the same reason a lot of people do: I wanted something slow and rewarding to do with my hands, and I wanted a bit of colour and a few home-grown vegetables to show for it.

This site is for beginners. The kind of people who’d love to start but quietly think, “I’d probably just kill everything.” You won’t kill everything. And when something does die, it’s a cheap lesson, not a verdict on you.

What you’ll find here

Plain, first-hand advice on getting started: choosing plants that forgive a missed watering, sowing your first seeds, keeping a small garden going without it becoming a chore, and growing a bit of food and a few herbs. Most of it works on a modest plot, a patio, or even a sunny windowsill.

How I write

I share what I’ve learned by doing it, and when I mention a fact or a finding I say where it comes from. Gardening should leave you healthier and happier. If it ever stops doing that, my advice is always the same: scale it back and enjoy it again.
